FIES 2018: New rules, Registration and Modalities

FIES or Student Financing Fund was created by the MEC (Ministry of Education) with the aim of offering student credit to those who cannot pay college or university fees.

This student credit is offered in the form of a loan and whoever requests it must pay in installments pre-determined in the contract.

The student can finance up to 100% of the monthly fee and the installments that must be paid every 3 months reach R$ 150.00.

The advantages of the credit offered by FIES to students are numerous. The interest rates on this financing are very low and are certainly affordable for your budget. The student has a period of up to 17 years to pay off the loan.

New FIES 2018 rules and modalities

Now the FIES 2018 will have new financing rules divided into 3 different modalities. Are they:

FIES 1

This type of financing modality benefits candidates belonging to families that have a per capita family income of up to 3 minimum wages.

• The interest rate for this modality will be 0;
• The number of vacancies available will reach 100 thousand;
• The installments that students must pay will be up to 10% of their monthly income without interest.

FIES 2

This modality covers students residing in the North, Central-West and Northeast regions of the country.

The per capita family income must be up to 5 minimum wages and the interest rate is variable, reaching a maximum of 3% per month.

In this modality, the number of available places will be approximately 150 thousand places.

FIES 3

This modality will cover students who belong to a family whose per capita income is up to 5 minimum wages.

A total of 60,000 places will be available.

The FIES 1 financing modality is fully funded by the public authorities. The other FIES 2 and 3 modalities are funded by BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) and other regional banks.

Another important rule that will undergo changes is in relation to educational institutions. They will also be partners in cases of default.

Registration for FIES 2018

Registration for the FIES 2018 should not undergo major changes. They continue to be carried out online on the official website.

To register, the candidate must be regularly enrolled at the higher education institution and must have taken the ENEM and obtained a minimum grade of 450 points.

Click on the “Register” option;

Step 3

Click on the “First access” option and fill in all your personal information such as:

• Name;
• CPF;
• Date of birth and corresponding characters from the image.
